The first step – site operatives

There is a big contrast across Europe in the attitude to the development of young site operatives; some offer structured and nationally recognised training courses, others take a hire and fire approach and hope the best will stick with it. Check out the national differences using the dropdown boxes on the right.

It is universally agreed that companies value good site operatives extremely highly, and once you’ve proven your worth, the rewards can be considerable. It’s an outdoor, mobile life and if you develop the right skills and experience you could literally be travelling the world to ply your trade.

Further opportunities

Site operatives
You’ll be at least 18, and many companies like some previous life and work experience beyond school.

Rig driver
If you demonstrate a good work ethic and reliability, you could be operating a rig within five years.

Foreman and supervisors
With two good years as a rig driver, an ambitious operative might be ready to step out of the cab and start as a trainee foreman.

Beyond supervision
If you get to the top of supervision, there are opportunities to get out of the field, which will probably become increasingly attractive as you get older.

Plant mechanics and depot management
As a construction plant mechanic there is much more structured training available than for foundation site operatives.

Crane drivers
Essential in a support capacity to almost all foundation activities, crane driving is also a valuable transferable skill into other types of construction.
